Background of the Study

Emergency nursing plays a crucial role in the management of critically ill patients, where quick, precise, and effective interventions are essential for reducing mortality rates. In Kano State, emergency nurses are often the first healthcare professionals to assess and stabilize critically ill patients, including those with conditions such as trauma, heart failure, stroke, and sepsis. The impact of emergency nursing on patient outcomes, particularly in reducing mortality rates, is an area of growing interest in health systems research.

Studies (e.g., Sulaiman et al., 2023) have shown that emergency nurses who are well-trained and able to make swift clinical decisions significantly reduce mortality in critically ill patients by providing early interventions, monitoring vital signs, and coordinating patient care. However, limited research exists on the specific contributions of emergency nurses in reducing mortality rates in Kano State’s emergency units. Addressing this gap is crucial for improving the quality of care in emergency settings and enhancing patient survival.

Statement of the Problem

Critically ill patients require immediate, highly specialized care to prevent deterioration and death. In Kano State, emergency units often face challenges, including overcrowding, resource limitations, and insufficient training, which can affect the ability of emergency nurses to perform effectively. Understanding the role of emergency nurses in reducing mortality rates, particularly in resource-constrained settings, is essential for developing policies and interventions that enhance patient survival.

Despite the critical role that emergency nurses play in the care of critically ill patients, there is limited research on their specific contributions to reducing mortality rates in emergency units in Kano State. This research aims to bridge this gap and provide evidence that could guide improvements in emergency nursing practice.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of emergency nurses in reducing mortality rates among critically ill patients in Kano State.
  2. To evaluate the factors that influence emergency nurses’ effectiveness in managing critically ill patients.
  3. To recommend strategies to enhance the role of emergency nurses in reducing mortality rates in critically ill patients.

Research Questions

  1. What role do emergency nurses play in reducing mortality rates among critically ill patients in Kano State?
  2. What factors influence the effectiveness of emergency nurses in managing critically ill patients?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the role of emergency nurses in reducing mortality rates?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Emergency nurses in Kano State play a significant role in reducing mortality rates among critically ill patients.
  2. Factors such as training, experience, and resource availability significantly influence the effectiveness of emergency nurses in managing critically ill patients.
  3. Implementing targeted training and improving resources enhances the role of emergency nurses in reducing mortality rates among critically ill patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on assessing the role of emergency nurses in reducing mortality rates among critically ill patients in emergency units within Kano State. Limitations include variability in patient outcomes across different facilities and potential biases in self-reported data from nurses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Emergency Nurses: Nurses who specialize in providing immediate care to critically ill or injured patients in emergency settings.
  • Critically Ill Patients: Patients who are in life-threatening conditions and require urgent medical intervention.
  • Mortality Rates: The proportion of patients who die within a specified period, often used to measure the effectiveness of medical interventions in emergency care.
